How To Choose a Good Forklift Counterweight?

Many different types of forklifts, forklifts or lifts are used for material handling. Their main function is to transport materials of different sizes, shapes and weights to the forks.

Forklifts are usually classified according to the following parameters:

• Power type (electric or internal combustion engine)

• Location name (indoor or outdoor)

• The position of the operator (standing or sitting down)

• Tires (flat tires or pneumatic tires)

When lifting and transporting heavy objects, forklifts require extra weight to ensure counterbalance.

Increase the forklift counterweight to prevent the forklift from tipping over. Although the counterweights used in the material handling industry are much smaller than those used in the off-highway industry, they should have the required weight.

Besides the design every manufacture should rather concentrate on the material selection.

Cast iron counterweight is the best choice. Because the volume of the forklift is relatively small, the counterweight must have the best space utilization rate and provide the necessary counterweight. This can only be achieved by using high-density materials, such as metals, especially cast gray iron.

Cheaper materials, such as concrete or a mixture of concrete and metal blocks, cannot achieve this goal because they take up more space for the same weight. The concrete will need to add aggregates or scrap metal blocks, projectiles or bars to make it denser. However, the density of cast metal is always higher than that of aggregate or mixed concrete.

Counterweight function:

1. A weight used for a counterbalance.

2. The force or influence that opposes another force or influence.

Remove a forklift counterweight

Forklifts are used in warehouses to move large cargo, load containers and unload trucks. They have the ability to lift trays of materials and place them in storage locations to maximize the vertical size of the room.

For forklifts, to lift large goods, counterweights are often used to shift the center of gravity of the vehicle to adapt to heavy goods or high placement positions. To remove the counterweight from the forklift, you need to use another forklift or winch to lift the counterweight from the forklift and place it in the storage location. Many counterweights are between 3000 pounds and 5000 pounds.

Find the counterweight on the forklift. The counterweight will be located at the front, rear or at the center point of the forklift. Once you have found the counterweight, find the mounting bolts or pins to connect the counterweight to the forklift.

Fix the overhead winch or forklift to the top of the counterweight with a chain.

Lift the counterweight using a winch or forklift, and remove the counterweight from the mounting bolts. Use a wrench to remove the mounting bolts or pins.

Lift the counterweight another few more inches, if you are using a forklift, pull it out from under the counterweight.

Move the counterweight to a storage location and lower it to the floor. Reinstall the mounting bolts and pins on the balance weight.
